The Congress in Tripura has reacted sharply to a Facebook post where Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Debโ€˜s teenaged son was seen flaunting a Light Machine Gun (LMG) in a Durga Puja pandal.

Demanding an inquiry into the incident, senior Congress leader Subal Bhowmik said, โ€œDuring Durga Puja the CMโ€™s son was roaming with a gun. A photograph has also gone viral on social media.โ€

โ€œThis could be dangerous for people. We demand an inquiry to find out how he got the gun and whether it was licensed,โ€ he said.

Alleging the police of not taking any action, the senior Congress leader said, โ€œThe police did not take any action as he is the CMโ€™s son.โ€

โ€œNo inquiry was initiated because he is the chief ministerโ€™s son,โ€ he added.

โ€œWhen supporters of opposition parties upload or share anything against the state government or the chief minister, they are immediately arrested and harassed by the police,โ€ Bhowmik further said.

โ€œNo civilian is allowed to handle a service weapon as per rules. However, I am not aware of the facts,โ€ said Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Subrata Chakraborty.

Reacting to Bhowmikโ€™s statement, Tripura BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said, โ€œCongress leaders have started personal attacks after losing their identity in the state.โ€

He also said that instead of making it public, the Congress leaders could have brought the issue in the knowledge of the department concerned.
