Tripura government has approved the merger of 961 schools following a low percentage of enrolment there.

Tripura education minister Ratan Lal Nath informed the decision on Thursday.

โ€œIn a state cabinet meeting held today, the state government has approved the merger of 961 government-aided schools having a low percentage of enrolment,โ€ Nath said.

โ€œThe education department has been already given orders to go ahead with the merger.

โ€œAccordingly, 800 students will be shifted to nearby schools,โ€ Nath added.

โ€œAmong the 961 schools, 946 are primary and 15 are upper primary,โ€ Nath informed.

โ€œTransportation cost will be provided to the students who will be readmitted to nearby schools after the merger,โ€ said the education minister.

As per proposal students travelling 1.5 kilometres to schools will not get any transportation cost.

โ€œStudents travelling beyond 1.5 kilometres will be provided with the transportation fees accordingly,โ€ Nath reiterated.

โ€œThe government plans to cover 1000 students in the first year and estimated Rs 40.32 lakhs will be spent in the year,โ€ Nath added.
