Meghalaya government has decided to allow opening of grocery shops and essential commodities for four days in a week from Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 4 pm.

The wholesale shops for picking up of essential commodities will be allowed to remain open for three days in a week from Friday to Sunday.

โ€œThis is being done to ensure that there is more timing given to the people so that they can buy essential items without overcrowding,โ€ Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said.

The state government also informed through the food & civil supplies department that under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and Non-NFSA, distribution of foodgrains for April-May quotas has started.

โ€œFree foodgrains under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana for the month of April have been lifted from the FCI and are ready for distribution,โ€ the chief minister said adding that 1000 MT rice under the open-market sale scheme is being distributed.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya food & civil supply minister James Sangma on Friday made a surprise visit to one of the warehouses at Them Iew Mawlong.

In the warehouse 2,312.09 quintals of foodgrains out of 27,116 quintals meant for East Khasi Hills from FCIโ€™s Open Market Sales Scheme (OMSS) have arrived and is ready to be lifted for the open market.

โ€œI made a surprise visit to one of the Warehouses at Them Iew Mawlong where 2312.09 quintals out of 27,116 of food grains meant for East Khasi Hills from FCIโ€™s Open Market Sales Scheme (OMSS) has arrived and is ready to be lifted for the Open market,โ€ Minister Sangma tweeted.
