Residents at Margherita in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district simmered with anger over the alleged torture of a 45-year-old-specially-abled man inside an army camp.
The villagers said the brutality was doled out by personnel of the Indian Army’s Rajputana Rifles at Jagun under Ledo police station of the district.

Locals said the Indian Army personnel picked up the man identified as Rangan Hakhun from his residence at Malau village in the foothills of the Patkai Hills on charges of his nexus with NSCN militants.
He was questioned at the army camp allegedly brutally tortured by the personnel.
The incident has provoked strong reactions from the tribal people.

Hundreds of tribal people on Sunday gathered at the Ledo to protest the torture mated out to the man.
“We’ve assured action against the army personnel, but the fact is that Assam is under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, so we can’t do anything,” said a police official.
The members of the Tirap Autonomous District Council Demands Committee said that they would lodge a complaint against Army with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The organization’s spokesperson Pallav Shyam Bailung strongly condemned the incident, saying it was a violation of human rights.
He called on the government to ensure the safety of the tribal people.
