The Diphu regional unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) burned the effigy of Bokajan’s BJP MLA Dr Numal Momin for his controversial comment on the students’ body’s stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
MLA Momin made the comment, referring to the Assam Accord, 1985 and the AASU, recently on his Facebook account.
The Diphu regional unit of AASU burned the effigy of MLA Momin in front of the Post Office at the Traffic Point in Diphu market on Thursday.
The Facebook post of Dr Momin read: “Citizenship Amendment Bill a misnomer. AASU don’t have moral rights to oppose it. During their tripartite accord in 1985 did they mention anything about it. As Citizenship Act existed since 1955. They kept mum during their accord, now shouting like anything to cover up their fault. Jai Ai Axom.”
The president of the Diphu regional unit of AASU, Shorjun Hanse, said, “In the six-year-long Assam Movement launched by the AASU from 1979 to 1985 to flush out foreigners, 855 people lost their lives. It is the outcome of the movement that the Bokajan (the constituency of MLA Dr Numal Momin) is there and Dr Numal Momin could have a place to settle down. Where has he got the authority to point fingers at the AASU saying it has no moral rights.”
Hanse also said, “He (Momin) also went on to criticize the Assam Accord. He should come out with strong evidence.”
AASU’s Diphu regional unit president Hanse also blamed Dr Momin for low quality of road repair works undertaken in his constituency, Bokajan.

“Dr Momin has invited contractors from Nagaland to take up road repair works in Bokajan. The quality of work is so low that the upper-layers of black-topping have separated and can be rolled like a mat. Dr Momin has allowed a contractor from Nagaland to carry out works here, but do any contractors from Karbi Anglong get any tender to work in Nagaland?”, Hanse said.
Hanse further criticized Dr Momin saying, “He is a doctor, but now as an MLA he is involved in illegal coal mining in Karbi Anglong. The State Government and the BJP are not taking any action against him.”
AASU also threatened to launch a strong agitation against the MLA. AASU’s Diphu regional unit’s general secretary Simanta Gogoi and other leaders and members of the unit also took part in the effigy burning programme.
The Bokajan unit of the AASU also recently burned the effigy of the MLA for his controversial comment on the students’ body on Facebook.
