Guwahati: The Assam Forest Department late Sunday evening announced the arrival of a new member at the zoo in Guwahati.

The zoo, which houses seven one-horned rhinoceroses, has witnessed a rhino birth after 11 long years.

โ€œAs rhinos flourish in the wild in Assam, captive breeding too has a success story to tell! The new guest at Assam State Zoo is a #rhino calf born to ‘Pori’,โ€ the Assam Forest Department wrote in a post on X.

The zoo now has eight one-horned rhinoceroses, including four females and three males, with the calf yet to be named or its sex determined.ย 

โ€œItโ€™s first time since 2013 when @assamzoo witnessed a rhino birth. Besides the calf, the zoo has 4 female & 3 male rhinos,โ€ the forest department added in the post on X. ย 

The only zoo in the state is home to nearly 1,300 animals.

Thousands of visitors come to the Northeastern regionโ€™s largest zoo to catch a glimpse of some of the endangered and exotic animal species housed there.
