Guwahati: Two additional people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh, bringing the total number of suspects to 12, according to police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sources, reported The Daily Star.
The victim, 25-year-old garment worker Dipu Chandra Das, was attacked by a mob over alleged blasphemy in Baluka, Mymensingh, on Thursday.
Das was beaten outside his factory, hanged from a tree, and later his body was left on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway before being set on fire.
Authorities recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
Dasโs brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a case at Bhaluka Police Station on Friday, naming 140โ150 unidentified individuals.
The attack was reportedly linked to a social media post allegedly offending religious sentiments.
However, RAB-14 Company Commander Md Samsuzzaman told The Daily Star on Saturday that investigators found no evidence that Das had posted anything offensive online.
Local residents and factory workers also confirmed that they had not witnessed or heard anything that could be considered blasphemous.
Samsuzzaman added that Das was forcibly removed from the factory to prevent further escalation when tensions grew.
The interim government condemned the lynching, stating that such violence has no place in the country. โThe perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared,โ the statement read.
