Imphal: A sit-in protest against the brutal murder of Manipuri housewife Khaidem (Ongbi Chanambam) Chaoba Devi, 25, was organised at the Iramsiphai Leirak Asangba community hall in Wangoi, Imphal West district, on Sunday.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the murder of Chaobi Devi organised the protest, demanding, among other things, early justice and appropriate punishment for those involved in the crime.
Chaobi Devi, who went missing on December 26, 2025, was found dead the next day under suspicious circumstances near a secluded area of a temple located at Wangoi Mamang Khaidem, under Wangoi police station.
Locals discovered the body, which led to the destruction of properties belonging to Khaidem Dhaneshore, also called Boynaocha, 28, the husband of the deceased. The police reportedly fired tear gas to disperse the protesting crowd.
Police said that Khaidem Dhaneshore and the mother-in-law of the deceased were arrested, and investigations into the case have begun.
The body of the deceased is currently at the RIMS hospital mortuary in Imphal for post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, the JAC announced that the body would not be claimed until justice is served. Police reports added that the Wangoi police station has registered a case for investigation.
