Guwahati: Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has been appointed chairperson of the partyโs screening committee for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
The Congress announced the screening committees for Assam, Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Saturday (January 3, 2026).
For Assam, apart from Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the committee will include Lok Sabha MP Saptagiri Ulaka and Rajya Sabha MP Imran Masood. The panel will shortlist candidates for the Assembly polls.
The decision reflects the Congress partyโs efforts to regain political ground in Assam. The party ruled the State continuously for 15 years from 2001 before losing power to the BJP in 2016.
Last year, the Congress strengthened its Assam unit by appointing Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, as the State party president.
For Kerala, the screening committee will be headed by Madhusudan Mistry, with Rajya Sabha MP Naseer Hussain, Neeraj Dangi and Abhishek Dutt as members.
The screening committee for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will be led by T.S. Singh Deo, while B.K. Hariprasad will head the committee for West Bengal.
