Guwahati: Tripura has experienced below-normal daytime temperatures over the past five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Since January 1, the state’s maximum daytime temperatures have consistently stayed 3°C to 9°C below normal, according to Dr Partha Roy, Director of IMD Agartala.

The state recorded a daytime high of 16.8°C on January 5, 8.6°C below the usual temperature, marking the largest negative deviation in the country that day. “Bihar recorded around seven degrees below normal, while Tripura had the highest departure at 8.6 degrees,” Dr Roy added.

He noted that the current temperatures matched earlier IMD predictions, which had forecast maximum temperatures 3°C to 6°C below normal for the past several days.

Looking ahead, the IMD expects the cooler conditions to continue for the next two to three days.

Maximum temperatures are likely to remain 3°C to 5°C below average, while minimum temperatures are expected to hover between 11°C and 13°C.

Fog warnings have also been issued across the state. Over the next two days, dense fog is likely at one or two locations in each district.

Some areas have been issued yellow alerts, while lighter fog is expected in other parts of the state.

In response to the conditions, the state government has decided to keep schools closed until January 10.

Transport authorities have been advised to take precautions due to low visibility, especially in the early morning, and residents have been urged to exercise caution while traveling.
