Kokrajhar: Public anger erupted in Kokrajhar on Saturday after the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman in the Patharghat area. Protesters blocked roads and staged demonstrations near the Sadar police station, demanding swift action and strict punishment for the accused.

The incident reportedly occurred around 9.30 am. Soon after, demonstrators blocked the Kokrajharโ€“Bilasipara road and raised slogans seeking justice for the victim.

Police arrested the accused, identified as Rafikul Islam, a labourer from Chapar in Dhubri district. He was working at a construction site in Patharghat. Officials said preliminary findings suggest the accused lured the orphaned woman into a shed and assaulted her.

Protesters said the victim later narrated the incident to her sister-in-law, which brought the matter to light. Some members of the crowd also alleged that locals initially caught and assaulted the accused before police intervened and took him into custody.

As the protest intensified, demonstrators voiced concerns over womenโ€™s safety and accused authorities of failing to prevent such crimes. Tension rose when a section of the crowd demanded that police hand over the accused to the public.

Police deployed senior officers at the site to control the situation and clear the road blockade. Officials said they brought the situation under control and restored traffic movement.

Authorities said they are conducting a detailed investigation. Police are recording the victimโ€™s statement and completing medical and legal procedures. They appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.

The incident has renewed concerns over womenโ€™s safety and the protection of vulnerable persons in the region.
