Guwahati: Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sharply criticized the BJP, focusing on rising crimes against women and widespread unemployment among young people in states governed by the party.
Addressing a public gathering in Guwahati, Vadra condemned the BJP for offering cash handouts to women before elections while failing to ensure their safety or provide stable employment opportunities. She questioned whether women had received adequate protection and support over the past five years, pointing to a worrying increase in crime rates.
Vadra asked, “Are jobs available for the state’s youth?” Governments led by the BJP may distribute money to women during elections, but in these five years, have they been given safety or jobs? How many women were empowered to stand on their own?”
She also accused the BJP of using welfare schemes as a smokescreen to hide systemic issues, alleging that state resources were being concentrated in the hands of a single ruling family. “These measures are meant to distract people, while the wealth of the state shifts from public ownership to the control of one family in power,” Vadra added.
Before the rally, Vadra presented a 20-point report highlighting alleged failings of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration.
The report, unveiled at the Manvendra Sharma Complex, raises serious allegations against the state government ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, according to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), said that Vadra’s visit showcased Congress’s determination ahead of the state polls.
