Agartala: Road traffic accidents in Tripura continue to claim lives in the most productive age group, Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar said on Thursday, noting that the consequences extend beyond individual families and affect the state’s socio-economic fabric.

Speaking at a prize distribution ceremony organised as part of Police Week celebrations, the DGP said road traffic accidents (RTAs) declined by 9 per cent in 2025 compared to 2024, while fatalities dropped by 13 per cent during the same period. He said the police aim to bring the numbers down further but stressed that enforcement measures alone would not suffice without greater public awareness.

According to him, 65 per cent of those killed in road accidents belonged to the 18–25 age group. He described it as a critical phase of life when young people begin contributing to society and the economy.

Citing scientific studies, Anurag identified over-speeding as a major cause of accidents, stating that a one per cent increase in speed raises the likelihood of a crash by four per cent. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increases the risk fivefold, he said, adding that mobile phone use while driving and failure to wear helmets remain significant contributory factors.

As part of the week-long Police Week events, marathon runs are organised across district headquarters to spread awareness about road safety and drug abuse.

The DGP flagged off a marathon organised by West Tripura district police at Umakanta stadium in the presence of senior officials and District Magistrate Vishal Kumar. Addressing participants, he said the state government is committed to curbing drug abuse and that police action against trafficking networks in 2025 surpasses that of the previous year. He described substance abuse as a serious social concern and reiterated the goal of building a drug-free Tripura.

Similar events were held in other districts. In South Tripura, a marathon was organised between Netaji Choumuhani and Manubazar School Choumuhani with participation from residents and students. In Unakoti district, a run from Unakoti Kalakshetra to Kailashahar Police Station was held. Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R says the event aims to spread awareness about drug eradication and the new criminal laws enacted in 2023.

In Udaipur, a “Run for Drug-Free Tripura” saw participation from police personnel, youth and local residents in the presence of Additional SP Rishav. A similar awareness run was also organised in Santirbazar, police officials said.

The DGP reiterated that while accident figures show a decline, sustained public cooperation remains essential to further reduce fatalities on the state’s roads.
