Imphal: A joint team from the Manipur police and central security forces arrested three extortionists associated with two separate insurgent outfits in different operations across the twin cities of Imphal West and Imphal East on Saturday, officials reported on Sunday.
A pistol, two magazines loaded with 16 live rounds, and a mobile phone were recovered from them.
In the first operation, Manipur Police arrested two extortionists identified as active cadres of the United National Liberation Front – Koireng (UNLF-Koireng) from Wangkhei Ayangpalli under Porompat Police Station in Imphal East district.
They are self-styled 2nd Lieutenant Asem Nongpoknganba Meitei alias Ngangoiba (32) and Thangjam Gandhi Meitei alias Yaima (27).
Police seized one pistol, two magazines loaded with 16 live rounds, and a mobile phone from their possession.
In the second operation, the police arrested an active cadre of the Kangleipak Communist Party – Nongdrenkhomba (KCP-N), identified as Laishram Monish Singh alias Tom (23) of Khagempalli Pankha Nganapi Thong Mamang, under Singjamei Police Station in Imphal West district, from his residence. A mobile phone was seized from him.
The arrested individuals and recovered items have been handed over to the relevant police stations for further legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, security forces continue to conduct search operations and area domination in fringe and vulnerable areas across districts. A total of 115 nakas (checkpoints) were installed in different districts of Manipur, both in the hills and the valley, though no arrests were reported from them. The movement of 254 vehicles carrying essential items along NH-37 has been ensured.
Strict security measures are being maintained in all vulnerable locations, with security convoys provided along sensitive stretches to ensure the free and safe movement of vehicles.
