Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has approved a Rs 103 crore project to bring Silchar its first five-star hotel, aiming to expand tourism and luxury hospitality in the Barak Valley.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Polo Hotels Group will oversee the construction, investing around Rs 103 crore into the initiative.

โ€œThis decision sets the stage for introducing a five-star hotel in Silchar. Polo Hotels Group will put in approximately Rs 103 crore to make this project a reality,โ€ Sarma said.

The hotel will introduce world-class luxury accommodations to Silchar for the first time, providing facilities that meet international standards.

Silchar, a key economic and administrative centre in the southern part of Assam, is expected to benefit from increased opportunities in tourism and corporate events.

Officials have confirmed that the property will feature about 100 premium rooms and suites, blending modern hospitality standards with the regionโ€™s unique cultural elements.

Guests will have access to specialty restaurants, bars, a resort-style swimming pool, a spa and wellness centre, a gym, and fully equipped banquet and conference spaces suitable for business summits, exhibitions, weddings, and government functions.

Analysts point out that Indiaโ€™s hotel industry has rebounded strongly in recent years, driven by growth in corporate travel and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) tourism.

The Silchar project forms part of Polo Hotels Groupโ€™s wider expansion plan, which includes new properties in Meghalaya, Tripura, West Bengal, and Nagaland, extending the groupโ€™s presence across eastern and northeastern India.

Deval Tibrewalla noted that the hotel aims to capitalize on Silcharโ€™s increasing economic and institutional importance, opening up fresh opportunities for tourism and commercial activities.

The project is also expected to boost employment, as each room can create several direct and indirect jobs across sectors such as catering, transportation, event planning, and local services.

After the hotel opens, Silchar will be equipped to host national conferences, corporate meetings, and large destination events, overcoming the previous limitations caused by the lack of high-end accommodations.
