Aizawl: The Mizoram Legislative Assembly is set to deliberate on a resolution seeking the inclusion of the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Officials of the Assembly Secretariat said the resolution will be moved on Monday, March 9, by School Education Minister Vanlalthlana shortly after the Question Hour during the ongoing session.

The proposed resolution is aimed at strengthening efforts to secure constitutional recognition for the Mizo language by including it in the Eighth Schedule, which lists Indiaโ€™s officially recognised languages.

Mizo serves as the lingua franca among various Mizo tribes and communities and functions as a key unifying language across the state.

The move follows recent consultations between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and members of the Eighth Schedule Study Group under the Mizo Language Development Board (MLDB). During discussions held earlier this year, the group informed the Chief Minister that there was widespread support among civil society organisations and ethnic Mizo communities for the inclusion of the language in the constitutional schedule.

Members of the study group also noted that although a proposal seeking constitutional recognition for the Mizo language had earlier been submitted to the Centre, the matter was not pursued vigorously at the national level.

To revive the process, the group recommended the formation of a dedicated task force to re-submit the proposal with updated documentation and broader institutional backing.

Historically, Mizo was declared the official language of Mizoram in 1974 and continues to serve as the principal medium of communication across the state.

The language also holds cultural significance beyond Indiaโ€™s borders, functioning as a common linguistic link among Zo ethnic communities living in different parts of the world.
