Meghalaya GHADC special session
GHADCโ€™s term is extended by six months to October 18, 2026, allowing more time to address the situation.

Guwahati: Meghalaya Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar has called a special two-day meeting of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on March 23 and 24.

The session will discuss changes to the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts Council Rules, 1951.

The changes focus on who can vote and run in council elections. They propose making ST certificates mandatory, which would prevent non-tribal candidates from taking part.

The move follows recent violence in Tura and nearby areas after non-tribal candidates tried to file nominations. The elections have been postponed.

Clashes in Tura on March 9 left two people dead. Authorities imposed curfews, suspended mobile internet, and deployed security forces, including the Army.

Former Chief Executive Member Albinush R. Marak resigned after a no-confidence motion. Dhormonath Ch. Sangma became the new CEM to restore order.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the session will deal with rule changes and a vote on account. On the non-tribal issue, he said, โ€œDonโ€™t jump to conclusions. Let the amendments take place and we have to respect the decision of the house.โ€

The Meghalaya High Court had earlier struck down a GHADC notification on ST certificates, saying it lacked proper legal backing.
