Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigns from Congress, joins BJP, and files nomination for Dispur ahead of Assembly elections.

Guwahati: Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from Congress and joined the BJP, a move that adds a new dimension to Assam’s political scenario ahead of the Assembly elections. Speaker Om Birla approved his exit on March 24, effective from March 20.

Bordoloi officially quit Congress on March 17 and formally became a BJP member the next day. The party quickly declared him its candidate for Dispur, a constituency that houses the state’s main administrative offices, including him in the BJP’s first list of 88 nominees.

Speaking after his nomination, Bordoloi thanked BJP leaders and clarified that he had not sought any position within the party. He said his switch was motivated by a desire to serve the public more effectively.

He told reporters that he joined the BJP to find a platform where he could contribute meaningfully to governance and development, without seeking any personal advantage.

Reflecting on his political journey, Bordoloi demonstrated his four terms as a legislator and around 15 years in ministerial roles under the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government. He also served two consecutive terms in the Lok Sabha, representing Nagaon.

Bordoloi expressed his willingness to collaborate with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, noting that their previous work together had helped advance development projects and address insurgency issues. He said he welcomed the opportunity to work with Sarma again.

Regarding his campaign in Dispur, he said he plans to connect with voters respectfully and earn their trust as a BJP candidate.

He added that generating jobs and improving living standards would be the main focus of his election agenda, alongside supporting the state government’s ongoing development initiatives.

The Election Commission of India has scheduled polling on April 9 for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam, with counting set for May 4.
