Guwahati: A day after nominations closed for the Assam Assembly elections, the process moved into scrutiny, with 776 candidates validated across 124 constituencies, according to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the office said scrutiny has been completed in 124 of the 126 Assembly constituencies. โ€œThe verification process for the remaining two constituencies, namely 24 Barpeta (SC) and 65 Dhekiajuli, has been adjourned till 11 a.m. on March 25,โ€ it said.

A total of 815 candidates had filed 1,389 nomination papers for the elections. The figures were streamlined during scrutiny as duplicate and invalid nominations were filtered out.

Meanwhile, scrutiny in the Dhekiajuli constituency has drawn attention following objections raised against BJP nominee and minister Ashok Singhal. Congress candidate Batash Orang has alleged discrepancies in Singhalโ€™s nomination papers.

In a letter to the Returning Officer, Orang said he had examined the documents submitted by the BJP candidate and claimed to have found anomalies. As of the time of filing this report, the Election Commission of Indiaโ€™s official website did not reflect Singhalโ€™s nomination as accepted.

The Election Commission has reiterated that the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 26, 2026, up to 3 p.m.
