Guwahati: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Assam on Thursday, April 2, as the party ramps up its campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections, with several senior leaders already touring the state.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha will address two major rallies during his one-day visit. His itinerary begins in Bokajan in Karbi Anglong district, followed by a second rally in Titabor in Jorhat district. The visit follows recent campaign appearances by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

According to the Assam Congress, Gandhi will depart from Delhi in the morning and arrive at Dimapur airport before proceeding by helicopter to Bokajan, where he is slated to address a public gathering. He will then travel to Titabor to hold another rally, focusing on voters in upper Assam.

The visit forms part of a broader Congress effort to challenge the ruling BJP-led alliance in the state. Party leaders have been centring their campaign on issues such as governance, welfare, and regional identity.

Earlier, speaking at a rally in Nazira, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a sharp attack on both the state and central governments, urging voters to reject what she termed a โ€œgovernment of double-slaveryโ€ and back a Congress-led alternative.

โ€œThey only work for you when they see some benefit in it for themselves. We want a government in Assam which doesnโ€™t scare you, doesnโ€™t threaten you, and doesnโ€™t serve its own interests, but serves the people,โ€ she said.

She also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, questioning the BJPโ€™s โ€œdouble-engine governmentโ€ narrative and alleging it has failed to deliver.

Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The election is expected to witness a direct contest between the incumbent BJP-led NDA and the Congress.
