Guwahati: Former MLA Estamur Momin surrendered before police on April 13 in Ri Bhoi district after remaining absconding in connection with violence linked to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Momin appeared at Nongpoh Police Station after evading arrest since unrest broke out earlier this month. The violence is traced back to March 9, when he visited the Deputy Commissionerโs office in Tura to file his nomination papers for the GHADC polls.
According to officials, his presence sparked protests outside the DC office, which soon escalated into clashes. Authorities have also accused him of delivering an inflammatory speech at Chibinang on the same day, allegedly intensifying tensions and contributing to the spread of violence across parts of the Garo Hills.
Following the deterioration of the law and order situation, the state government suspended the GHADC elections. Police said Momin had been on the run since the outbreak of violence in an attempt to avoid arrest.
Further details regarding the charges against him and subsequent legal proceedings are awaited, officials added.
