Guwahati: A devastating fire destroyed the historic Thangu Sertok Gumpa in North Sikkim on the night of June 5, causing extensive damage to the revered Buddhist monastery and two neighboring homes.

The blaze reportedly broke out at around 11 pm and quickly spread through the structure. Villagers rushed to the spot and attempted to control the flames, but the intensity of the fire left little chance of saving the monastery or its contents.

The incident has dealt a significant blow to the local community, as the monastery was regarded as an important center of religious and cultural heritage. Established in the mid-1960s, the gumpa had long served as a spiritual landmark for residents of Lachen and surrounding areas.

In addition to the monastery, two nearby houses were completely destroyed in the fire. No official information regarding casualties has been reported so far.

Authorities are yet to determine what triggered the blaze. Officials are expected to conduct a detailed assessment of the losses and launch an investigation into the incident.
