Dibrugarh: A 32-year-old man was arrested in Dibrugarh for allegedly attempting to murder his wife after attacking her with a large stone, leaving her critically injured.
The victim, identified as Janmoni Gogoi (26), sustained severe head injuries and is undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).
Police identified the accused as Ajay Gogoi alias Bablu Gogoi, a resident of Bagidal Tiniali in Assam’s Sivasagar district. The couple had been living in a rented house at Krishna Nagar Thana Gali in Dibrugarh’s Chiring Chapori area.
According to police, the incident took place around 10.30 pm on Monday at Deuri Path. Preliminary investigation suggests an argument broke out between the couple after the husband allegedly suspected his wife of having an extramarital relationship.
During the altercation, the accused allegedly attacked Janmoni Gogoi with a stone, repeatedly striking her on the head, police said.
Eyewitnesses said two passersby rushed to the spot after hearing the woman’s cries for help and intervened, preventing further assault.
Police later reached the scene and shifted the injured woman to AMCH for treatment.
Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family at Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station, police arrested the accused and launched an investigation.
The accused remains in police custody, and further investigation is underway.
