Aizawl: Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Thursday led the Green Mizoram Day plantation drive by planting a sapling of the state tree, Herhse (Mesua ferrea), at the Upper Lawn of Raj Bhavan in Aizawl.

Officials and staff of the Governor’s Secretariat also participated in the programme by planting saplings at the venue.

Addressing the gathering, Singh described Green Mizoram Day as an important initiative for environmental protection and sustainable development. He urged people to continue planting saplings throughout the plantation season rather than restricting their efforts to a single day.

The Governor said Mizoram continues to enjoy rich forest cover and healthy ecosystems, and stressed the importance of protecting natural resources amid growing climate-related challenges.

He noted that forests play a vital role in regulating climate, purifying air and sustaining the water cycle.

Emphasising that tree plantation should not remain a symbolic exercise, Singh called on citizens to ensure proper care and maintenance of saplings so that they survive and grow into mature trees.

Plantation programmes were organised across different parts of the state to mark the occasion.

Green Mizoram Day has been observed annually on June 11 since its launch in 1999. According to officials, more than 17.79 lakh trees have been planted under the initiative till 2025.
