Imphal: The Manipur government has imposed indefinite prohibitory orders across the entire Bishnupur district, effective from 7 PM on Saturday, following concerns over the prevailing law and order situation.
In an order issued on June 13, 2026, the District Magistrate of Bishnupur prohibited the assembly of five or more persons in any public place within the district. The directive also bans the carrying of firearms, sticks, clubs, spears, explosives and any other objects that could be used to inflict violence.
The move comes after Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh, IPS, along with senior officials, visited the District Police Headquarters in Bishnupur on Saturday to review the security situation, crime trends, and ongoing operational challenges. During his interactions with district police personnel, the DGP underscored the importance of intensified counter-insurgency and anti-narcotics operations.
He also stressed the need for the safe and sustainable resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and directed officials to expedite investigations and disposal of cases under the Special Investigation Team (SIT). A coordination meeting was also held with Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) commanders deployed in the district, with emphasis on strengthening security in fringe areas during the ongoing farming season.
The order further prohibits rallies, processions, and demonstrations without prior written permission from the District Magistrate, as well as obstruction of roads and essential services.
These restrictions, however, will not apply to security forces, government officials on duty, and personnel from essential services including health, PHED, power departments, education staff, municipal officials, media persons, ATM cash replenishment teams, financial institutions, child helpline, women helpline, elder line services, telecom operators and judicial institutions under the jurisdiction of the High Court of Manipur.
Authorities have warned that violators will face action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
