Doomdooma: Tension gripped Makum in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Tuesday as thousands of people staged protests and blocked NH37 at Gangabari after a man allegedly assaulted earlier this month died during treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.
The deceased, identified as Mukut Orang (45), a resident of Gangabari Gate Line, succumbed to his injuries days after he was allegedly assaulted on June 11.
According to reports, Orang was allegedly attacked by Mohammed Imran Siddiqui, proprietor of the restaurant Urban Tasty and a resident of Purana Bazar in Borhapjan.
News of Orang’s death triggered fresh protests, with members of the All Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), supported by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and several other organisations, demanding justice for the victim, compensation for the bereaved family and strict action against the accused.
Protesters also called for a thorough investigation into the case and sought action against all those found responsible. Some demonstrators demanded the harshest punishment permissible under law.
Amid mounting public pressure, Makum Police arrested Siddiqui and reportedly sealed the restaurant.
Police have registered a case bearing No. 30/2026 under Sections 109(1), 196(1), 351(3), 117(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 27 of the Arms Act. A pistol was also allegedly recovered from the accused’s possession.
Heavy deployment of police and security personnel was made across the area to prevent any untoward incident as protests continued.
