Guwahati: Guwahati Traffic Police has rolled out an extensive traffic regulation plan in preparation for Ambubachi Mahayog 2026, which will be observed at Maa Kamakhya Temple from June 22 to June 26. The temporary measures aim to streamline pilgrim movement, reduce congestion, safeguard pedestrians and maintain unhindered access for emergency services across the city.
As per a statement issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), special restrictions and route diversions will remain active throughout the festival period, particularly in and around the Nilachal Hills, where a sharp rise in visitor flow is expected.
Under the new system, vehicular entry from the Kamakhya foothill towards the temple premises will be strictly barred. However, essential and emergency service vehicles, including ambulances, fire services, oxygen carriers, and municipal maintenance units, will continue to operate without restrictions. Transport carrying drinking water and critical supplies will be allowed during designated night hours between 11 pm and 5 am.
Only vehicles possessing valid administrative car passes, along with ferry services, will be permitted to move from Pandu Temple Ghat to the temple via Bangshibagan. Personnel assigned for festival duties will report at Sonaram Higher Secondary School ground and be transported through designated ferry arrangements.
Dedicated boarding and drop-off points have been assigned for devotees arriving from different corridors. Vehicles coming from Jalukbari and Bharalumukh will use service lanes near Nilachal Flyover for passenger drop-off before proceeding to parking facilities at Adabari Bus Stand and Boripara Field.
Public transport operations will also function under revised guidelines. Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses, city services and private vehicles will primarily move via Nilachal Flyover, with strict instructions limiting passenger drop-offs to approved locations only.
Pilgrims have been advised to use designated parking areas such as Adabari Bus Stand, Boripara Field, ITA Machkhowa, ASTC Parking Zone at Machkhowa and Idgah Field. These zones will accommodate two-wheelers, light vehicles and buses during the festival period.
Movement of goods carriers and slow-moving vehicles will remain restricted on key roads including DG Road, MG Road, AT Road, Pandu Port Road, and Borbazar Road between 5 am and 11 pm to ease traffic pressure.
Inter-district and long-route buses, including ASTC services, will be diverted away from central stretches of the city. Special shuttle arrangements will be operated for pilgrims arriving at Kamakhya Railway Station, connecting them to temporary holding camps at Pandu Port.
Heavy vehicle movement from NH-27 towards Gosala via Tetelia will also be regulated. Authorities have advised air passengers to plan journeys in advance and preferably use the NH-27 route to reach Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport during peak hours.
The entire area beneath Nilachal Flyover has been designated as a reserved parking zone, while roadside parking has been completely prohibited along major corridors such as Pandu Port Road, Borbazar Road, DG Road, the elevated stretch at Bharalumukh, and sections of Nilachal Flyover.
Officials have appealed to commuters, residents, and devotees to adhere strictly to the traffic plan and cooperate with enforcement personnel for the smooth conduct of Ambubachi Mahayog 2026.
