Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Anti-Drugs Warriors (APADW) president and prominent anti-drugs activist Gumin Mize was arrested in East Siang district on Thursday in connection with a rape case and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody by a local court.

According to sources, Mize was apprehended around 2 pm and produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody pending investigation.

The arrest followed an FIR lodged by a woman accusing Mize of rape, criminal intimidation with a firearm, sexual harassment and exploiting her vulnerable circumstances while her husband was undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation centre.

According to the complaint, the woman approached Mize in April seeking help regarding her husband, who was later admitted to a rehabilitation centre by members of the APADW.

The complainant alleged that Mize took her to a secluded location in his vehicle on April 29 and sexually assaulted her. She further alleged that he threatened her with a pistol and later pressured her over matters related to her husband’s release from the rehabilitation centre.

Police registered a case under Sections 64(1), 75(2), 115(2), 351(3) and 12(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Section 25(1B)(a) of the Arms Act.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised over the handling of the initial court proceedings. According to sources, the accused was present in court when the survivor’s statement was being recorded before a magistrate.

The development has prompted questions over whether adequate safeguards were in place to ensure that the complainant could depose without fear or intimidation.

Police have not issued a detailed statement on the concerns surrounding the proceedings. The investigation is underway.
