Guwahati: A Guwahati court has summoned artist Marshall Baruah and youth leader Ankuman Bordoloi to appear on June 25 in connection with the 2024 Bharalumukh protest case related to opposition against tree felling in the area.

The summons follows their earlier arrest during demonstrations that raised concerns over urban green cover loss and drew criticism from environmental organisations and civil society groups.

The two individuals had earlier remained in judicial custody for 14 days after being booked under several non-bailable provisions, including charges related to alleged conspiracy.

The matter originates from an artwork advocating environmental protection, which authorities reportedly viewed as insulting to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and it continues to be widely discussed in public circles.

In Guwahati, the tree-removal drive at Bharalumukh became a major point of dispute, with students, activists, and artists opposing the clearing of trees for infrastructure and beautification projects.

The situation intensified after a mural of singer Zubeen Garg, created by Baruah at the Ganeshguri underpass, was painted over by authorities ahead of a scheduled visit by then-Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The removal triggered strong online reactions, with citizens demanding that the artwork be reinstated. Baruah later recreated a modified version of the mural with a prominent red background.
