Guwahati: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has identified 366 landslide prone locations across Kamrup Metropolitan district, heightening concerns over public safety as heavy monsoon rains continue to affect Guwahati and its surrounding areas.
According to officials, the identified sites are spread across hilly and environmentally sensitive areas that have witnessed landslides or ground instability in the past. Several of these locations are situated along hill slopes, excavation zones and rapidly urbanising neighbourhoods where increasing human activity has intensified the risk of slope failures.
The list has been prepared following detailed field inspections, a review of previous landslide incidents and an assessment of geographical and terrain-related risk factors.
ASDMA has urged residents living in these areas to remain vigilant during the monsoon and immediately alert authorities if they notice any warning signs of a possible landslide.
People have been advised to look out for cracks on the ground or buildings, leaning trees or electric poles, unusual water seepage from hillsides and sudden movement of soil, all of which may indicate an imminent landslide.
Guwahati has witnessed several rain-triggered landslides in recent years, resulting in casualties, property damage and disruption of normal life. Experts have linked the growing frequency of such incidents to unplanned urban expansion, indiscriminate hill cutting, deforestation and increasing pressure on fragile hill ecosystems.
With the monsoon expected to remain active, authorities have appealed to residents to follow safety advisories, report early warning signs without delay and cooperate with disaster management agencies to minimise the impact of landslides. Early preparedness and community awareness, they said, are critical to reducing risks during the rainy season.
