A fresh take on electoral politics and the everyday lives of ordinary citizens is set to arrive on the Assamese silver screen with XYZ, an upcoming political comedy directed by Himanshu Prasad Das.

Scheduled for theatrical release on July 24, 2026, the film blends humour, drama and social commentary to examine how politics shapes the lives of common people, offering audiences a satirical yet thought-provoking cinematic experience.

Produced under the banner of Rhythm Creation, XYZ marks the debut production of Hemanta Kalita from Sualkuchi, who steps into filmmaking with a project deeply rooted in contemporary Assamese society.

The story has been penned by Ashiq Zaman, while the cast features Bhabesh Boruah, Siddhartha Sarma, Upakul Bordoloi and Pranami Bora in prominent roles.

According to director Himanshu Prasad Das, the title XYZ carries a symbolic meaning. Rather than referring to a particular individual, it represents the countless unnamed and often overlooked people who play an indispensable role in the political process.

While public attention is usually centred on prominent political leaders, the film seeks to acknowledge the ordinary citizens, grassroots workers and silent participants whose contributions often remain invisible despite being essential to the functioning of democracy.

The film explores the impact of elections on Assamese society. Through satire and humour, XYZ examines how political campaigns influence everyday life, social relationships and community dynamics.

The narrative presents fictional political parties with amusing names such as the Brinjal Party, using parody as a vehicle to comment on the culture of electoral politics without targeting any specific political organisation.

Described as a cinematic journey filled with emotion, mystery, drama and comedy, XYZ follows characters whose dreams, struggles and destinies intersect against the backdrop of an election season.

The film balances entertainment with social observation, inviting audiences to reflect on the deeper realities hidden beneath the spectacle of political campaigns.

A significant portion of the film was shot in Sualkuchi, Assam’s renowned silk town, lending authenticity to its visual landscape. Around 200 local residents participated in the production, reflecting the filmmakers’ effort to involve the community and capture the atmosphere of the region realistically.

Their participation adds a distinctive local flavour to a story that draws much of its strength from familiar social settings.

The film’s promotional campaign recently gathered momentum with the launch of its official poster at Shraddhanjali Kanan, where the makers also unveiled a romantic track composed and sung by Bhaskar Opswel.

Director Himanshu Prasad Das has steadily emerged as a distinctive voice in Assamese cinema through films such as Joy Hanu Man (2024), Bulu Film (2022) and Goru (2021). Known for combining social themes with engaging narratives, he continues that approach in XYZ, using comedy not merely for entertainment but as a means of examining larger questions about democracy, public participation and the relationship between politics and everyday life.

With its unconventional title, satirical narrative and strong local grounding, XYZ promises to offer a refreshing addition to Assamese cinema.

By shifting the spotlight from powerful politicians to the ordinary individuals who quietly shape the political landscape, the film presents a perspective that is rarely explored on screen.

As it heads for its July 24 release, XYZ is expected to spark both laughter and reflection, reminding audiences that behind every election lies the story of countless unnamed people who make democracy possible.
