Besides seeking ST status, AASAA demanded that the daily wage of tea garden workers be raised to Rs 551 from the current Rs 280

Dibrugarh: Members of the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) staged a rally in Dibrugarh on Monday, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Adivasi community, higher wages for tea garden workers and land rights.

The protesters marched to the office of the District Commissioner, raising slogans before holding a demonstration and submitting a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Besides seeking ST status, AASAA demanded that the daily wage of tea garden workers be raised to Rs 551 from the current Rs 280. It also sought land pattas for Adivasi families living in tea gardens and rural areas.

An AASAA representative said the demands reflect long-pending concerns of the community.

“Our people have worked in Assam’s tea gardens for generations. ST status, fair wages and land rights remain our core demands. We are here to remind the government of these commitments made before the elections,” he said.

The memorandum reiterated the demands and urged the government to implement them at the earliest.
