Eight people were stranded after a sudden river surge at a picnic spot in Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday afternoon.

Guwahati: Eight people were stranded after the water level of a river rose suddenly at the Longsokangthu picnic spot in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday, triggering panic among visitors.

According to reports, the group was in the middle of the river when the water level increased rapidly, turning the stream into a fast-flowing current and cutting off their route to safety.

A video of the incident has since surfaced on social media, showing the stranded individuals surrounded by rising water as the current intensified. The footage has drawn widespread attention and renewed concerns over the safety of tourists visiting river-based picnic destinations during the monsoon season.

The incident highlights the risks of sudden increases in river levels caused by heavy rainfall and upstream water discharge, which can lead to flash surges with little or no warning.

Residents advised tourists to remain vigilant while visiting picnic spots near rivers, streams and waterfalls during the monsoon season. They also urged tourists to check weather forecasts and assess river conditions before visiting picnic spots near rivers, streams and waterfalls to reduce the risk of accidents.
