Digboi: A woman was robbed of a gold necklace worth around Rs 5 lakh by unidentified motorcycle-borne miscreants in broad daylight in Assam’s Digboi on Tuesday, barely 500 metres from the Digboi Police Station.
The incident took place on the busy New Market–AOD Road along the boundary wall of Digboi Refinery, near the Post Office and an SBI ATM. The spot is also around 600 metres from the AOD Security Control Room.
The victim, Saroja Sharma, a resident of the NS Area under Digboi Police Station and widow of late Dipak Sharma, a former AOCLU leader and AOD employee, was allegedly targeted by four persons travelling on two motorcycles.
According to police, Sharma had completed banking work at the Indian Bank and was waiting near a three-wheeler stand when the assailants struck.
Speaking to this reporter, Sharma said she initially believed only one motorcycle was involved but later recalled seeing two motorcycles carrying four persons.
“I can clearly recall now that there were two motorcycles carrying four persons. The first bike came towards me, and one of them raised his hand as if to assault me. When I instinctively tried to defend myself and stepped aside, another motorcycle coming from behind swiftly snatched the gold necklace from my neck and sped away. Everything happened within a matter of seconds,” she said.
Family members said the stolen necklace weighed more than 30 grams and was valued at about Rs 5 lakh.
Police registered an FIR and launched an investigation. Officers are examining CCTV footage from multiple locations in the AOD area to identify the suspects, trace the motorcycles used in the crime and establish their movements.
The incident has raised concerns among residents as it occurred on one of Digboi’s busiest commercial stretches and close to both the Digboi Police Station and the AOD Security Control Room.
Residents urged the authorities to identify the offenders at the earliest, strengthen surveillance and increase police patrolling in the area.
Police said the investigation is underway.
