Guwahati: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday announced the withdrawal of its indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, claiming that the Union government had accepted all of its key demands following discussions with federal ministers.
Addressing a press conference after the meeting, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said the government had agreed to the group’s demands, including the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of those who allegedly died by suicide following the alleged examination paper leak, and assurance that no legal action would be taken against people who participated in the protests.
Das said the organisation was ending the agitation “in good faith” after receiving a positive response from the Centre. He added that the CJP had submitted a draft of its proposed written guarantee to the government, which is expected to respond by Tuesday.
“Our demands have been accepted, and we are withdrawing the protest in good faith. We have shared a draft of the written guarantee with the government, and they will respond by Tuesday,” Das said.
CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka also appealed to demonstrators to end the agitation peacefully.
“All our demands have been accepted. We request the protestors to peacefully withdraw the protest with immediate effect,” Ranka said.
The protest at Jantar Mantar had drawn students and youth from across the country, who demanded accountability over the alleged examination paper leak and called for sweeping reforms in the country’s examination system. The agitation gained national attention and intensified after Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down as Union Education Minister.
While the CJP has announced the end of its protest, it remains to be seen how the Centre formalises the assurances, with the organisation awaiting the government’s written response expected by Tuesday.
