Guwahati: The Assam government has informed the Legislative Assembly that 82,751.86 hectares of the state’s land remain under the occupation of four neighbouring states.
Responding in writing to a question from Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday, Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora said the occupied land is spread across Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Mizoram.
Among them, Nagaland accounts for the largest share, with 59,490.21 hectares of Assam’s land under its occupation. Arunachal Pradesh occupies 16,144.01 hectares, followed by Mizoram with 3,675.78 hectares and Meghalaya with 3,441.86 hectares.
Bora also informed the House that these neighbouring states have staked claims over significant portions of Assam’s territory. Nagaland has claimed 12,882.6 sq km of Assam, while Meghalaya has claimed 2,732.14 sq km, Mizoram 927.74 sq km, and Arunachal Pradesh 858.91 sq km.
He said the state government is working to resolve the long-pending boundary disputes through dialogue with the neighbouring states.
“As per the directions of the Union Home Ministry, bilateral agreements have already been signed with Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh,” Bora told the Assembly.
Assam shares interstate boundaries of 884.9 km with Meghalaya, 804.1 km with Arunachal Pradesh, 512.1 km with Nagaland, 164.6 km with Mizoram, and 46.3 km with Tripura.
The minister said discussions with neighbouring states are continuing to achieve mutually acceptable settlements and bring lasting solutions to the interstate border disputes.
