Guwahati: The body of Tutumoni Duwara, the last of four family members who went missing after being swept away by floodwaters in Assam’s Charaideo district, was recovered on Wednesday, ending an 11-day search operation.
Tutumoni, a resident of Abhayapuri village under Tengapukhuri Police Station, had been missing since July 19 when flash floods struck the area. Her recovery confirms that all four members of the family lost their lives in the tragedy.
Search teams had earlier recovered the bodies of her daughter, Bidisha Duwara (30), and her sons, Bidyut Duwara (36) and Biplab Duwara (25), over the course of rescue operations.
According to reports, sudden floodwaters inundated the home of Rohini Duwara at Abhayapuri village, forcing the family to flee in search of safety. During the evacuation, Tutumoni and Bidisha were caught in the powerful current and swept away.
Hearing of the incident, Bidyut and Biplab rushed into the floodwaters in an attempt to save their mother and sister. However, both were unable to withstand the strong current and were also carried away.
The deaths have emerged as one of the most tragic incidents reported during this year’s floods in Upper Assam, underscoring the heavy human toll caused by the prolonged monsoon disaster.
The overall flood situation in Assam continues to remain critical. Official data shows that flood-related fatalities in the state have risen to 75 this year, while more than 3.32 lakh people remain affected across multiple districts. Authorities are continuing relief, rescue and rehabilitation operations in the worst-hit areas.
