Guwahati: Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, surrendered before a sessions court in Shillong on Wednesday after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail previously granted to her.
Her appearance before the court followed directions issued by the apex court, which overturned the earlier bail order in the sensational case that has attracted nationwide attention.
Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, had travelled to Meghalaya with Sonam for their honeymoon shortly after their marriage in May 2025. The couple disappeared during the trip, prompting an extensive search operation.
Investigators later recovered Raja’s body from a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra, East Khasi Hills district. The discovery led Meghalaya Police to register a murder case and constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the police, the investigation uncovered evidence suggesting that Raja’s killing was the result of a planned conspiracy. Sonam was subsequently arrested along with several other accused in connection with the case.
The prosecution has alleged that Sonam played a key role in orchestrating the murder. Investigators have also examined the alleged involvement of her former partner and others suspected of assisting in planning and carrying out the crime.
The case drew significant public attention across the country because of the circumstances in which the newly married couple disappeared and the subsequent allegations that the honeymoon had been used to execute a pre-planned murder.
Although Sonam had secured bail from a lower court, the order was later challenged before the Supreme Court. The apex court set aside the bail and directed her to surrender before the competent court in Shillong.
Following her surrender, the sessions court remanded Sonam to judicial custody. The murder case is currently pending before the court, with further legal proceedings expected in the coming days.
