Imphal: The indefinite strike by petroleum transporters in Manipur has been called off after the state government assured enhanced security measures along key highways, paving the way for the resumption of fuel transportation and distribution across the state.
The Consortium of Manipur Petroleum Product Transporters’ Fraternity, along with associations representing local petroleum transporters, LPG distributors and drivers, announced the withdrawal of the agitation following discussions with the state government.
According to the transporters, the decision came after the Chief Minister and senior Home Department officials assured them that a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for convoy movement would be notified in the State Gazette. The new SOP is aimed at strengthening security for fuel transporters and preventing extortion and other threats along the highways.
With the strike withdrawn, the loading, unloading and distribution of petroleum products resumed on Monday at depots across Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Police has stepped up security arrangements along National Highway-37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road), a key supply route that has witnessed repeated incidents of extortion and attacks.
In a circular issued by the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), dedicated police teams have been deployed at vulnerable stretches in Tamenglong district, including the Kambiron-Sibilong and Makru-Old Kaiphundai sections, to ensure the safe movement of fuel tankers and other essential goods.
Inspector General of Police (Zone-III) Kamei Angam Romanus has been appointed as the nodal officer to oversee the expanded highway security arrangements. He will be assisted by designated sub-nodal officers in coordinating security operations.
The circular also directs district Superintendents of Police to intensify operations against extortion networks and work closely with local communities to curb illegal activities along the highway.
The police further said security forces would maintain close coordination with the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Assam Rifles and the Indian Army to ensure safe convoy movement and uninterrupted transportation of essential commodities across the state.
