Guwahati: Supreme Court judge Justice Ujjal Bhuyan will deliver a keynote lecture on “Development and Sustainability: Latest Trends” at a public programme organised by Dharitri Suraksha Mancha, Assam, in Guwahati on August 8.
The lecture will be held at 5 pm at Vivekananda Kendra, Uzan Bazar, and is aimed at fostering public discussion on balancing development with environmental sustainability.
The programme will also feature a special address by K.N. Chowdhury, President of the Guwahati High Court Bar Association and Senior Advocate, who will speak on environmental law and the judiciary’s role in addressing ecological challenges arising from development projects.
According to the organisers, Chowdhury is expected to discuss how constitutional and environmental jurisprudence can help strike a balance between developmental priorities and environmental protection.
Mahesh Deka, Chief Convener of Dharitri Suraksha Mancha, Assam, said the lecture is intended to encourage informed public discourse on the challenges of pursuing economic development while safeguarding the environment.
He said the event will bring together members of the legal fraternity, environmentalists, academicians, students, policymakers, civil society representatives and concerned citizens for discussions on contemporary environmental issues.
Dharitri Suraksha Mancha, Assam, an environmental collective based in Guwahati, has been working to promote environmental awareness, conservation and public engagement on ecological issues affecting the state.
The organisation believes that meaningful dialogue involving the judiciary, legal experts, policymakers and citizens is essential for achieving sustainable and equitable development.
The organisers have invited lawyers, students, researchers, environmental activists, members of civil society, media representatives and the general public to attend the programme.
