Agartala: A 24-year-old Bangladeshi national was allegedly killed in BSF firing near the India-Bangladesh border in Kailashahar of Tripura’s Unakoti district in the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Tara Mia, a resident of Das Teki village in the Prithimpasha area of Kulaura upazila in Bangladesh’s Moulvibazar district. His father was identified as Abdul Malik.
According to local sources and BSF personnel, a group of around five to six Bangladeshi youths allegedly attempted to cross the international border around midnight on Saturday while carrying suspected smuggling materials.
The incident reportedly occurred near border pillar 1845/63-S, in a fencing-light area under border number 44 of Maguruli gram panchayat in Gournagar RD Block.
The sources claimed that BSF personnel deployed in the area repeatedly warned the group to stop and leave. However, the youths allegedly ignored the warnings, following which the BSF personnel opened fire.
Tara Mia reportedly sustained critical bullet injuries during the firing and died at the spot.
Following the incident, BSF personnel and police from Irani police station reached the location and carried out the required legal procedures. The body was later recovered and transported to Unakoti District Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Dr Imran Ahmed, the doctor on duty at Unakoti District Hospital, confirmed that the body of a Bangladeshi national had been brought to the hospital around 11 am on Sunday.
He said the body had been kept in the hospital morgue while the necessary legal procedures were being completed.
The body remains at the morgue pending completion of the post-mortem examination and other formalities.
The circumstances leading to the firing, including the alleged attempt to cross the international border and the presence of suspected smuggling materials, could not be independently verified.
The BSF had not issued an immediate official statement on the incident.
