Guwahati: Flooding continued to affect four districts of Assam on Wednesday, with more than 1.12 lakh people affected. The weather department has forecast more rain in several affected areas.
The IMD’s Guwahati centre expects thunderstorms, lightning and moderate to heavy rain in parts of Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Tinsukia.
Flooding could spread to more areas as water in several rivers remains above the danger mark, an Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) official said.
At Numaligarh in Golaghat, the Dhansiri continues to be in a “severe flood situation”. Its level has been rising steadily, prompting the ASDMA to advise people not to go near the river.
The latest ASDMA bulletin reported no additional deaths, keeping the flood-related death toll this year at 101.
The four affected districts are Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar. More than 1,12,700 people are affected, with Golaghat accounting for over 65,000. Sivasagar has nearly 20,000 affected people, while Nagaon has more than 16,000.
The Dhansiri at Numaligarh and the Kushiyara at Sribhumi have both crossed their respective danger levels, the official said.
Relief assistance is being provided through 92 camps and distribution centres in five districts. A total of 30,205 people are receiving support through these facilities.
During the past 24 hours, the ASDMA supplied 420.32 quintals of rice, 74.72 quintals of dal, 22.42 quintals of salt and 2,058.95 litres of mustard oil to people affected by the floods.
Floodwater continues to cover 441 villages, while agricultural damage has been reported over 10,879.03 hectares.
Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also suffered damage in several districts.
The floods have also caused losses among 31,650 domestic animals and poultry, ASDMA data showed.
