Guwahati: The number of people affected by floods in Assam fell to 62,443 on Saturday as flooding declined in two more districts, leaving five districts affected.
No new flood-related deaths were recorded during the previous 24 hours, keeping this year’s toll at 104, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
Flooding was still reported in 235 villages spread across 16 revenue circles in Golaghat, Hojai, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Jorhat, according to the latest bulletin.
Nagaon accounted for the largest affected population at 33,332. Golaghat followed with 12,641 people, while Jorhat recorded 8,523 affected residents.
The number of flood-affected districts had stood at seven on Friday, when more than 78,000 people were impacted.
Authorities are currently sheltering more than 4,800 displaced people in 28 relief camps. Nine additional centres are distributing relief materials in the affected areas.
Floodwaters have remained over 4,954.43 hectares of farmland, while the number of affected animals has crossed 21,000. This includes more than 10,000 large animals and 3,500 poultry.
Officials also reported losses involving residential properties, livestock shelters, fish farming operations and medical facilities in the flood-hit areas.
