Main accused Aryan Goswami has been arrested in the mysterious death of a young woman in Assam’s Jorhat district.

Guwahati: The main accused in the mysterious death of a young woman in Assam’s Jorhat district has been arrested from Rongajan in Golaghat, police said.

Aryan Goswami was taken into custody in connection with the woman’s death after she allegedly fell ill following a gathering at a flat in Jorhat on August 15. She was later admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), where she died.

Police had earlier detained three women in connection with the case. The investigation began after the woman’s family filed an FIR at the Rowriah Police Outpost, alleging that she had been sexually assaulted and murdered.

According to the preliminary investigation, the gathering took place at a flat in Gauri Apartment on August 15. The premises were reportedly rented in the name of one of the three women detained by police on August 18.

The woman, from Pokamura Na-pamua village in Jorhat, had reportedly left home with a friend on the afternoon of August 15. She later became unwell and was taken to JMCH for treatment, but died at the hospital.

Police suspect that she fell ill while at the gathering. Investigators are also looking into the people who accompanied her to the hospital, as some of them reportedly left the premises and have not been traced so far.

Following Goswami’s arrest, police are questioning him to determine his alleged involvement and piece together what happened at the gathering and afterwards.

Investigators are also searching for other people believed to have been connected with the gathering and the events surrounding the woman’s death.

The precise cause and circumstances of the woman’s death have not yet been established. Police are continuing to investigate the family’s allegations of sexual assault and murder.
