Following an industry standstill caused by severe flooding in Upper Assam, several major Assamese film releases were indefinitely postponed. Now breaking the dry spell, the Assamese box office is set to resume operations with the state-wide release of the much anticipated, big-budget Assamese movie NRC — Nalparar Ram Chandra on September 25, 2026. Based on a narrative by Bedabrat Borah, the film blends socio-political reality with situational comedy to deliver a powerful message that raises social awareness across communities.
Regarding the title of the film, Bedabrat Borah explains that while the film is titled NRC, the subtitle Nalparar Ram Chandra appears directly beneath it to reflect the story’s dual significance. The film is built upon and inspired by an incident that took place during the NRC updates. However, depending on how closely it aligns — or doesn’t align — with the actual National Register of Citizens, the team ultimately decided to title it Nalparar Ram Chandra. “I truly hope the audience connects with and enjoys the film,” Borah added.
NRC — Nalparar Ram Chandra follows a resilient woman forced to abandon her ancestral home due to devastating floods. Displaced and vulnerable, she seeks refuge in a new land, where she gives birth to a boy named Kaushalendra.
Growing up, Kaushalendra developed a profound fascination for Bhaona, the traditional Assamese Vaishnavite theatre. He was deeply drawn to the divine character of Lord Rama, finding solace from his harsh reality.
As the years pass, Kaushalendra transitions into adulthood, only for his life to be upended by the sudden implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Caught in a bureaucratic maze, he is thrust into a grueling ordeal to produce legacy data and gather necessary documents to prove his Indian citizenship, igniting a relentless journey of identity and survival. Through his arduous journey, the film captures the raw psychological and social toll the NRC drive inflicts on ordinary citizens. However, the narrative holds a powerful, metaphorical twist: in this story, NRC represents far more than just official paperwork, it also stands for Nalparar Ram Chandra.
Produced by Nipon Kumar Talukdar under the banner of NK Media, the film marks the directorial debut of Nanan Pachani. The production of this film commenced in 2024 in the locations of Golaghat and was successfully completed in 2025. However, due to various reasons, the production house was unable to release the film.
Dipak Borah serves as the executive producer of the film, with Uday Bhaskar Patar handling the responsibilities of the chief assistant director.
Famous for his iconic role as KK, Siddhartha Sharma takes on the lead for the very first time in this film. The film also marks the highly anticipated return of Jayanta Bhagawati to the big screen after a long break. The cast features a blend of veteran actors like Upakul Bordoloi, Jolly Laskar, Ashim Krishna Boruah and Manoj Saikia, alongside rising talents Pankaj Mahanta and Boibhabi Goswami playing diverse characters. It will certainly be interesting to see how debutant director Nanan Pachani brings together this mix of fresh talent and experienced artistes to bring the story to life on screen.
The film’s creative and technical crew includes cinematographer Pradip Daimary, art director Shivam Saikia, makeup artist Kamal Talukdar and costume designer Juri Kalita. Sound design was handled by Kingshuk Moran, with an original musical score composed by Arupjyoti Baruah, Pranay Dutta, and Arnab Bashistha. The soundtrack features lyrics by Paplu Chetia, Danish Ahmed, and Rahul Gautam Sharma.
The post-production team consists of editor Manas Kashyap, colorist Rajesh Yadav, VFX artist Ratul Dutta, graphic designer N Deepak, and motion poster animator Rhituraj Dutta. The directorial team also comprises associate director Bedabrat Borah, alongside assistant directors Siddhartha Shankar Nath and Jitul Rajbongshi.
Notably, Assam’s beloved heartthrob and musical icon, Zubeen Garg, is associated with the music of the film.
