Manipur: Five banned outfits claim responsibility for grenade attacks on MLAs, fuel station

Imphal: A coalition of five banned underground outfits in Manipur, operating under the banner G-5, on Sunday claimed responsibility for a series of recent grenade attacks targeting the residences of two MLAs and a fuel station in Thoubal district.

In a joint press release, the G-5 said the attacks were “first warnings” to MLA S Ranjan (BJP) and MLA K Meghachandra (Congress).

The coalition claimed it had sought financial assistance from both lawmakers, who rejected the demands and allegedly challenged the “revolutionary movement.”

According to the statement, the G-5 remained silent for a year despite the MLAs’ refusal. However, the coalition decided to act after the politicians’ Public Relations Officers (PROs) allegedly began speaking in a disrespectful and insulting manner.

The group said both lawmakers must take responsibility for the attitude of themselves and their staff.

The G-5 said it had ensured there would be no casualties before detonating a hand grenade at S Ranjan’s Konthoujam Awang Leikai residence in Imphal West district on August 28. This was followed by a second blast at K Meghachandra’s Yairipok Bishnunaha home in Thoubal district on September 3.

The coalition accused the state’s lawmakers of failing to unite following the May 3, 2023 violence and said it would monitor what it described as “insincere leaders” who overlook public suffering.

The coalition also claimed responsibility for the August 29, 2026 grenade blast at the Sorojini Oil Pump in Wangbal, Thoubal district.

The G-5 said it had previously banned the fuel station, owned by Thokchom Jadumani of Khangabok, effective February 1, 2026.

The group alleged that Jadumani defied the prohibition, prompting the attack. It also warned of further action and urged the public to boycott the station for refueling.

The G-5 concluded its statement by thanking citizens who have financially supported its movement and said it does not make unaffordable monetary demands on contractors, businessmen or the private sector.

The coalition appealed to anyone who has received its financial demand letters to cooperate in a timely manner.

The G-5 coalition comprises the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), PREPAK Progressive, and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF-Koireng group).
