Guwahati: The first death anniversary of Assamese singer and musician Zubeen Garg will be observed on September 19 with a special Bhagawat Naam and Bhaona at Zubeen Kshetra, as part of a three-day commemorative programme beginning September 17.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, said the September 17 programme, observed as ‘Zubeen Divas’, will continue until around 5-5:30 pm. She said the organisers do not intend to hold events late into the evening and have invited people to visit the venue and pay tribute to the late singer in any manner they choose.
“People can come and do whatever they feel comfortable doing. They can pray, sing songs, play music or pay their condolences in their own way,” Garima said.
She said the programme on September 18 will begin at around 9 am, with cultural performances continuing through the day until approximately 6-7 pm. The organisers, however, plan to conclude the activities without extending them late into the night.
Religious observances will take centre stage on September 19, with Bhagawat Naam and other activities planned throughout the day. A Bhaona performance is scheduled to begin at around 6:30 pm and is expected to continue until approximately 9-9:30 pm.
Meanwhile, Assam Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah, accompanied by other officials and members, visited Zubeen Garg’s studio on September 8 and met with the singer’s family to discuss arrangements for the upcoming Zubeen Divas programme.
According to Garima, the minister agreed to the logistical requirements raised during the meeting and assured the family that the necessary arrangements would be put in place. She added that the state government would extend its support to the commemorative programmes.
