Aizawl: Five construction workers from Nepal and other Indian states have been detained for questioning in connection with the death of their co-worker in west Mizoram’s Mamit district, a police officer said on Friday.
The victim, aged 42, hailed from Nepal and was camping with others near Lungphun village when he was allegedly killed by his co-workers on Wednesday night.
His body was later recovered from a gorge, the police officer said. The workers were employed by a road construction company to repair roads, walls, and culverts.
An autopsy examination of the victim’s body was conducted at Kanghmun on Friday.
The police officer noted that the five suspects camping at the site were taken into custody to have their statements recorded.
The matter remains under investigation, and it is yet to be officially established whether the incident is a case of homicide.
Meanwhile, local residents alleged that the workers quarreled on Wednesday night, during which the victim was struck in the leg and subsequently dumped into a gorge by his peers.
