Dibrugarh: The body of a 22-year-old woman was recovered from a pit near Bastahara High School on Ram Mandir Road in Chabua, Dibrugarh, on Saturday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as Chinki Bhuyan, who had reportedly been missing since Friday.
Police recovered her body in a partially undressed and decomposed condition, raising suspicion about the circumstances surrounding her death. Her family has alleged that she may have been sexually assaulted and murdered.
Police have arrested Sumit Kalandi in connection with the case and launched an investigation into the womanโs death.
According to a police source, Bhuyan had been divorced by her husband after around a year of marriage and was the mother of a two-year-old child. Following her separation, she was reportedly in a relationship with Kalandi.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death and determine whether any criminal act was involved.
A police official said investigators currently suspect murder but cautioned that the probe was still at an early stage.
โWe have started an investigation into the death of the woman. We suspect that she was murdered. We have not found any visible marks on her body. At this stage, it is too early to ascertain anything as the investigation is still in its preliminary stage,โ the official said.
The post-mortem findings and further investigation are expected to establish the circumstances leading to Bhuyanโs death and clarify the allegations surrounding the case.
