Doomdooma: Following the declaration of the Assam Assembly Election 2026 results, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi on Monday evening formally conceded defeat, acknowledging the mandate delivered by the people.

The BJP-led alliance secured 102 seats, while the Congress won 21 seats, and others won 3 seats.

In his statement, Gogoi expressed humility in accepting the verdict and said the party would function as a responsible and constructive opposition.

“We humbly accept the people’s verdict and take full responsibility for this defeat,” Gogoi stated, while extending gratitude to voters who supported the opposition alliance.

He also congratulated the winning candidates and expressed hope that they would work to fulfill public aspirations and ensure the state’s progress, peace, and prosperity.

Reflecting on the outcome, Gogoi said the party would undertake introspection and organisational strengthening in the coming days.

“We will learn from this experience, rebuild with greater determination, and continue to serve the people with renewed commitment,” he said.

He also acknowledged the verdict of Jorhat voters with “respect and humility.”

Reiterating the party’s future role, he said Congress would support the government on pro-people initiatives while opposing policies considered against public interest.

“We will always stand with the people and raise our voice against any anti-people decisions,” he said.

Gogoi also expressed gratitude to party workers and supporters across Assam for their “unwavering dedication, sacrifices, and tireless efforts” during the campaign.

“Your courage and unity in challenging times remain our greatest strength,” he noted.

Accepting moral responsibility as the state Congress chief, Gogoi said the ideological struggle would continue. “We remain committed to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and interests of the people of Assam,” he said, adding that he stands ready to take up any responsibility assigned by the party leadership in the future.

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi faced his first electoral defeat, losing to veteran BJP leader Hitendranath Goswami by 23,182 votes in the Jorhat Assembly constituency.
